We’re excited to introduce Josh, our new Senior Software Developer, who has recently joined the Sort Group Dev team to help design and build our systems.
With a background in software development for the Oil and Gas industry, Josh has taken a leap into the Conveyancing world, bringing with him a vast range of skills and a travel list longer than most people’s to-do list (debatable to some… spoiler: it's over 40).
Since joining Sort Group, he has settled in quickly and is already making a positive impact on the team, with a strong focus on driving innovation within the Dev team and mentoring our junior developers.
Read on to find out more about Josh’s role, his thoughts on the future of technology in the conveyancing sector, and, most importantly go-to song.
How have you found your experience at Sort Group so far?
It has been a very pleasant experience so far. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, and I've really enjoyed getting familiar with the systems under development and the challenges they present.
What made you want to join our Sort Group team?
It was a new opportunity to dive into interesting work in a completely new domain with a whole new set of problems to tackle within a growing company - I had previously worked in the Oil and Gas industry, so Conveyancing is quite the change in environment!
I was also impressed with how organised and well-run the development team is, with a strong emphasis on development best practices, whilst fostering a friendly and collaborative culture.
What did you do before joining Sort Group?
I was a Senior Software Developer working in the Oil and Gas industry for a company that specialised in data analytics and visualisation - primarily developing software for monitoring the health of equipment on offshore platforms and within sub-sea systems.
What does your role as Senior Software Developer involve?
My role involves collaborating with the team to design and build robust, scalable systems, as well as lead projects and mentoring Junior Developers to help them grow and improve their skills.
How does Sort Group’s approach to technology align with your professional values/goals?
Something that really resonated with me is Sort Group’s strong focus on adhering to best practices and developing high-quality, maintainable code that is performant, robust, and scalable. All too often, organisations settle for “good enough” to get something working, with little thought about how the system will be maintained in the future, so it is refreshing to be a part of an organisation that strikes a good balance.
How do you think technology is shaping the future of the conveyancing/legal services sector?
I think technology will help to streamline processes that will enhance efficiency and minimise errors in property transactions. Also, with the advent of AI, it will become easier to automate routine tasks, enabling conveyancers to concentrate on the more complex aspects, resulting in faster processing and reduced human error, which will ultimately help to reduce the time required to complete on a property.
Outside of work, what are your hobbies/interests?
Travelling - I love experiencing new cultures and seeing new sites. I have travelled to over 40 countries and generally aim to do 5 new countries each year.
If you could invent one thing, what would it be and why?
A long-distance electric airplane that would make travelling cheaper and more accessible to all, whilst reducing the impact on the environment.
If you had the chance to know the future, what would you want to find out?
How far AI will progress and how it will shape society.
What’s one song that’s always on your playlist?
Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here
What advice would you give to aspiring software developers?
Always be curious! Development is a field that is constantly evolving with new technologies and concepts that can present quite a steep learning curve, which means having a passion for learning is essential. And the easiest way to learn is to have fun whilst doing it, so be hands-on and dive into fun side projects that will allow you to experiment with a wide range of technologies that will help you expand your knowledge. Once you overcome that initial barrier, software development becomes a true labour of love that is challenging, but very rewarding and fulfilling.
