Here at SortRefer, we have a large team with several departments, and it’s still growing.

Unfortunately, you won’t always have the pleasure of meeting some of our fantastic team face to face, so we feel it's important you have the opportunity to get to know them a little more.

Matt Ewers joined the SortRefer team just last month and has settled in well.

Matt is our Group IT manager here at SortRefer and has a wealth of knowledge.

He has worked across many industries including, commercial printing, retail, construction and more.

Join us as we get to know Matt via our recent Q&A blog.

Why did you decide to join the SortRefer team?

I was looking for a new challenge with a mix of leadership and hand’s on technical work, and the role ticked those boxes.

When I interviewed Matt and Conrad, they made it clear how tech can make a difference here and add value to the business, so I was excited to learn I’d be joining the team.

Tell us about your previous experience; what did you do before joining SortRefer?

Previously I’ve worked in IT across a wide range of industries, commercial printing, retail, construction, recycling, manufacturing and most recently in public transport.

It doesn’t change too much across industries, I’ve found, you always have some new specific applications to support and processes to learn. Then, there are the different ways different industries tackle similar problems, which I hope I’ll be able to do to demonstrate here.

How long have you worked in IT?

I’ve just had to work that out now I’ve been asked, 19 years and counting! It only seems like yesterday I was leaving college and going into my first tech role!!

What do you enjoy the most about working at SortRefer?

I enjoy being part of the wider tech team. In my last few roles, I’ve been the sole dedicated IT resource, so it’s nice to have people around you that you can bounce ideas off.

What would you like to achieve in the next year?

There’s a lot to be getting on with, both on the surface that everyone will see and that will go on behind the scenes to support the business as it grows. Far too much to list this early on, though.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you?

That’s a tough one, and I don’t think I’ve got any exciting secrets to share!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

In more normal times, socialising with friends and family like everyone that’s been limited to video calls for too long now.

I also keep fit with 5-a-side football and mountain biking.

Getting even more of a sports fix with season tickets at Nottingham Forest (I know that’s a brave admittance now I work in Derby!) and Nottingham Panthers along with spectating at motorsport both in person and on TV.

Plus, I’ve got a classic Mini I’ve had for almost as long as I’ve been working in tech that eats up any remaining time and money.

When lockdown lifted, what is the first thing you will be doing?

When things are fully lifted, I’ve got tickets for the British Grand Prix this year, so I’m hoping the road map goes to plan as I’ve only ever seen F1 on TV!

What is your favourite dish and why?

I like to try different food, and I’ll give most things a go once, but you can’t beat a good steak!
