We took some (virtual) time to speak to Brian Leppard at Buckingham James Financial Services Ltd to shine a light on industry challenges, we chatted about lockdown and what we hope to learn from this pandemic. Here's what Brian had to say:
1) What is an ongoing challenge for you in the industry and how do you overcome it?
This one is easy. Free Legals. The bane of our lives. Why lenders insist on using substandard firms is beyond me. Surely the time we waste on chasing them could be time better spent on doing more business for that very same lender. I hate to think how many complaints they get but I know, for sure, that I’ve encouraged a few of our clients to do so. Unfortunately, Free Legals poor service reflects badly on us which, although the client understands isn’t our fault, doesn’t look good. And, even more disappointingly, the lockdown has been used almost as a shield for that poor service, by using it as an excuse for not being able to speak on the phone/return emails/meet deadlines etc. We’ve all been challenged recently, and all been subject to the same lockdown – it’s just how you deal with it and learn from it that’s important. 2) During lockdown, businesses have had to adapt to new ways of working. How has the lockdown period been for you and your business and are there any new habits that you'll be taking forward, in a post-lockdown world?
Virtual meetings (Zoom etc), home working, shorter commute to the office, the landing is only a short walk (!) and being patient.
3) How long do you envisage recovery of the industry taking?
Honestly? We have been busy. April was an amazing month for new business. Like most, May was slower but, as I write, June 2020 is likely to finish off as another fantastic month too. Long may it continue.
4) What are the three key points that you'll take away and learn from during this pandemic?
Patience is a virtue; humans can be amazing (mostly) and I’m a far better mortgage broker than I am home teacher!
